Cocktail Corner: Caipirinha

The Caipirinha is a ninja favorite, and is almost guaranteed to be ordered if it's on the menu. Caipirinha is the national drink of Brazil, made with cachaça, sugar, and lime. Cachaça is the a rum made out of sugarcane derived products, versus the normal molasses derivation of typical rums. (Sidenote: dearest ninja readers, I'm a licensed bartender. I promise I would never lead you astray in this category.) This makes the rum lighter in my opinion, and has a nice summer taste. You know it's a good one when it's garnished with sugarcane; however lime is an acceptable option for a garnish. This is a mincemeat stickfigure darlings - five stars.

Luna Maya

Restaurant: Luna Maya
Cuisine: Mexican
Location: 1201 Colonial Avenue and 21st Street
Ninja Rating: {insert fairly dismembered stick figure once I figure this out}

The restaurant is fairly small and unimposing when you first pull up. I was immediately upset by the harshly colored chairs, but was quickly reminded by my dining companions that Mexican restaurants are not always known for their decor. We were told that reservations were not accepted, so we showed up expecting to wait for a little while. During our very reasonable 10-15 minute wait, we moved onto our first love: the bar. Marge and I quickly were drawn to the caipirinha - a Brazilian rum drink. Please see the next post in regards to my deep love affair with this drink. The drink was good, nothing exceptional. What was exceptional was the generous hand that the bartender used when pouring the booze - my kind of woman. Our other dining companions tried the mojito and margaritas to similar reviews - good, not great.

Once seated, we immediately ordered the guacamole. This was a recommendation that was well founded. The guac here is amazing, and frankly I would've been happy just eating this. When ordering, I had the enchiladas de queso. They say that these are spicy, so I ordered one with the normal sauce and one with the more mild sauce since I'm not very capable of handling spicy foods. This is not a necessary measure, as the house sauce was very good and not hard to handle at all. The mild sauce, on the other hand, was pretty boring and not worth eating. Marge ordered the pastel de choclo con chorizo - a spicy chicken chorizo casserole. This may sound frightening but believe me, it was amazing. I strongly recommend this dish if you visit this restaurants. Two of the menfolk we were out with ordered burritos. I was not a good reporter, darling reader if you exist, and don't remember the specific burritos they ordered. I do however remember that they were absolutely HUGE and the recipients were very satisfied with their dinner. Mama ninja was down for the weekend, and ordered tacos de carnitas, which were good but not exceptional. To be fair, it's hard to make pork tacos anything more than good, and they did a solid job at least.

Overview:
Portion Sizes: Generous
Drinks: Good not great, very strong (with a price to match).
Food: Delicious
Price Range: Reasonable. $10 - $18 for entrees, $4 - $8 for appetizers, $8 cocktails on average

Welcome to Ninja Dining

Ninja Dining is a review of restaurants in the Norfolk area. Ninja sister Marge and I are welcoming everyone along on our journey of trying to find the ideal restaurant to enter into a food coma. Seeing as I have no readers yet, there can't be a frequently asked question section. I will however take this opportunity to try to head off any questions that may come up from our maybe, potential, future reader(s).

What makes you qualified to judge?
Namely, that we are bitches. We grew up in the fine dining area outside of New York City, and expect only the best. We also take drinking incredibly seriously, and will always include alcoholic beverages in our reviews. We both make a valiant attempt to eat well, so when we decide to take the time to dine out we take it very, very seriously.

What is the rating system?
Since this is the Ninja Dining blog, our ratings will be in the form of how ninja crazy the food makes us. Stick figures will eventually accompany the blog, once I am smart enough to attach them. Stick figure ratings go from only mild excitement (chopping off one arm or even a finger if the only redeeming quality is a cute waiter) to minced up remains. The system is incredibly subjective, so I promise to attach captions to each picture. Pretty much the more mutilated the stick figure, the better the dining experience.
